History

In 1983, five mothers concerned about the lack childcare options offering parent involvement formed a non-profit corporation, Infant and Child Education Center of Arlington (later known as Little Beginnings Child Development Center). The purpose was to establish a child-care center to provide full-time care for infants and children up to kindergarten.

The Clarendon United Methodist Church provided space, and grants from the Junior League of Northern Virginia, the Clarendon Methodist Church, and the Mount Olivet Foundation helped fund LB’s start. LB opened its doors on January 27, 1986, under the trade name “Little Beginnings Child Development Center.” Its first director was Sue Anderson, who served until her retirement in 1992. She was followed by Iris Derenge and Catherine Lethbridge. The current director is Mandy Lloyd.
